The PCCC Executive Committee would like to share a letter to the editor from the NY City Council Minority Leader Joseph Borelli. While we all might not agree on the tenor of the article and some of the political rancor, the Co-op community can agree as to the devastating impact that the enforcement of Local Law 97 will have on us.
CM Borelli makes several important points that ring true with this issue:
1) the imposition of massive fines will destroy affordable housing;
2) compliance will be nearly impossible and extremely costly;
3) the criteria for compliance is so high that even a building with a LEED platinum status, touted by Al Gore, would not be in compliance and subject to fines;
4) many buildings just converted to gas to comply with NYC Codes and now will be fined for their compliance.
We certainly hope the significant issues raised here will get more attention and we need to let our elected officials in the NYC Council know that Local Law 97 needs to be reviewed further.
The PCCC has been actively engaging many NYC Council members to find ways to make the transition to lower carbon emissions affordable. We have been pressing for clear hardship exemptions for penalties and tax credits for carbon-reducing capital improvements.
